Abstract:
A survey of parallel bilingual texts in connection with determining various translating individualities within the oldest Czech translations
The aim of this article is an attribution survey in case to determine various translating individualities within the oldest Czech translation of the Bible from the mid-14th century, which is a collectively translated text. A survey of a corpus of parallel texts is introduced as a suitable method for deeper investigation of this problem. A specific feature of the bible – the existence of several nearly identical texts in various biblical books – proved to be an ideal space to explore styles of the translators of the Old Czech Bible. A comparison of the translation of verbs and conjunctives from parallel texts A (2 Samuel 5–8; 1 Chronicles 10 and 11, 13–14, 17–19) and B (2 Kings 18–20 and Isaiah 36–39) was conducted, with the results evaluated using the chi-square test. The results confirmed a hypothesis that the parallel texts A were most probably translated by two translators, while the both parallels texts B were translated by one translator.
